| This limestone structure was built for the Detroit Free Press in 1925. Designed by Albert Kahn, it has an arched entrance flanked by carved figures symbolizing commerce and communication. Michigan's oldest daily, the Free Press was founded in 1831, six years before Michigan became a state, as the Democratic Free Press and Michigan Intelligencer, By 1998, when the Free Press left this building, its staff had earned eight Pulitzer Prizes. |

The Detroit Free Press began publishing as the Democratic Free Press and Michigan Intelligencer on the morning of May 5, 1831. Michigan's oldest daily newspaper, it supported the drive for statehood, helped establish the Associated Press and sent reporters to the battlefield to cover the Civil War. In 1853 the Free Press began publishing the state's first Sunday newspaper. By its 150th year its staff had earned six Pulitzer Prizes. The Lafayette Boulevard building, built in 1925, was designed by Albert Kahn. Original marker, replaced 2000. |
