Gorham (1812-1901) came to Marshall from New York State. First a merchant, he became a banker and in 1865 organized the First National Bank of Marshall, now the Michigan National Bank. He was a defendant in the famous Crosswhite fugitive slave case. A vice-president of the first Republican Convention at Jackson in 1854, Gorham later was a state senator. During the 1870s he served as Minister to the Netherlands and then as Assistant Secretary of the Interior.
