The first utility pole set by the Presque Isle Cooperative was erected near this site on September 22, 1937. Established in 1935, the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) was a New Deal program designed to help cooperatives provide low-cost power to rural areas. On December 22, 1937. the Presque Isle Electric Cooperative energized its first seventy miles of line from Norway Dam in Alpena to Moltke Township in Presque Isle County, bringing electricity to eighty-two families.
